Joe Hockey, federal treasurer in the Abbott government and dropped by prime minister Malcolm Turnbull, is to be Australia’s ambassador to Washington. He starts his post in January ahead of Turnbull’s White House meeting with president Barack Obama. He replaces former Labor leader Kim Beazley, who returns home this month.

Hockey, aged 50, said in a short coffee shop interview that had he stayed in politics he would have spent too much time in “getting even” with those who unseated him. “I love my country more than my enemies”, he said.
